3、hipwithhisstudents;heevenallowedthemtoaddresshimbyfirstname.Healsodevelopedfreshteachingtechniquesandlearninggamestohelphisstudentswithspellingandmaths.Inhisearlytwenties,however,hegaveupteachingtopursue(追求)afull-timecareerasajournalistandpoet.WhenWaltWhitmanfi
4、rstappearedasapoet,hisarrivalontotheAmericanliteraryscenewasmetwithcontroversy.Hisfirstcollectionofpoems,LeavesofGrass,wassounusualthatnocommercialpublisherwouldprintthework.In1855Whitmanpublished,athisownexpense,thefirsteditionofhiscollectionoftwelvepoems.Whit
