2、nprocessingeffortfortheattainmentofmáximumcontextualeffects.Thisincrease,however,islimitedtotheresolutionofincongruitiestypicallypresentedinthissortofutterance.Humorousnovéis,becauseoftheirgreaterlength,arerathermorecomplex,andbasetheprocessofincongruity-resolutionlargelyonaninterplayofinternalcoh
3、erenceestablishedbytheuseofstrongimplicaturesinthedepictionofcharacter,andexternalincongruityestablishedonthelevelofthenarrator'sappealtothereader'sencyclopaedicknowledge.Theuseofstrongimplicatures,whichcharacterisestheseworksandseemsnecessaryforthesustainedcreationofhumour,wouldprobablyexplainthe
4、factthattheyareintuitivelyandalmostinvariablyconsideredthird-classliterature,since"good"literature,accordingtorelevancetheory,ischaracterisedbyacomplexityandmultiplicityofcontextualeffectsproducedfundamentallybytheuseofweakimplicature.1.IntroductionItnowseemstobeacceptedthat,contrarytoAustinandGri
