2、eywords:nonverbalcommunication,classroomEnglishteachingI.IntroductionAsweknow,ouraimtoteachlanguage,especiallyaforeignlanguage,istoteachthestudentshowtouselanguagetocommunicatemoreeffectivelywithotherpeople.However,foralongtime,wehavelaidmuchemphasisonthestudents’abilityofv
3、erbalcommunication,bothinoralandwrittenform,whileneglectingthatofnonverbalcommunication,anindispensablepartofcommunication.Infact,nonverbalcommunicationplaysanimportantroleinourdailycommunication.AccordingtoMehrabianandWeiner(1967,inGoss,1983:44),thereisaformulatoshowtherel
4、ativeweightsthatverbalandnonverbalmessagesplayinexpressingaspeaker’sidea:speaker’sattitude=words(7%)+toneofvoice(38%)+facialexpression(55%).Thatistosay,over90%ofone’sattitudeiscommunicatednonverbally.Forthis,weshouldpayattentiontonotonlywhatwesay,butalsohowwesay.AsEnglishte
5、achers,wecanimproveourteachingandachievebetterresultsifwecanappropriatelyusenonverbalcommunicationinclassroomteaching.II.DefinitionandTypesofNonverbalCommunication2.1DefinitionofNonverbalCommunicationManyscholarshavegiventhedefinitionofnonverbalcommunication.AsZeuschner(199
6、7:80)putsit,nonverbalcommunicationreferstotheinformationthatistransmittedfromsenderstoreceiverswhenthedominantmeaningisnotconveyedbytheuseofwords.Italsomeansthatnonverbalcommunicationisyouruseofinteractingsetsofvisual,vocalandinvisiblecommunicationsystemstoconveyandinterpre
7、tmeaning(Leathers,1992,inZeuschner,1997:80).2.2TypesofNonverbalcommunicationGenerallyspeaking,thestudyofnonverbalcommunicationbehaviorcanbedividedintothreemainareas:paralanguage,kinesicsandproxemics.2.2.1ParalanguageParalanguage,sometimescalledvocalics,isthestudyofthespeake
