1、TheNounPhrasesintheInauguralAddressesbyAmericanPresidentsAbstract:ThispaperstudiesthenounphrasesintheinauguraladdressesbyAmericanpresidentswithaviewtogainingamoreprofoundunderstandingofthefeaturesofthistypeoftexts.Anounphrasemayhaveacommonnoun,apropernounorapronounasitshead.N
2、ominalsarealsoregardedasatypeofnounphrase.However,inthispaper,thenounphraseincludesonlycommonnounheadednounphrases.Theothertypesofnounphraseareexcludedforthesakeofthesizeofthisresearch.Tocarryouttheresearch,thepresentresearcherfirstfollowedQuirk’stheoryandclassifiedthenounphr
3、asesintofivecategories:Head,Determiner+Head,(Determiner)+Premodification+Head,(Determiner)+Head+Postmodification,and(Determiner)+Premodification+Head+Postmodification.ThenthewriterchosefiveoriginalinauguraladdressesmadebyAmericanpresidentstodothisminiresearch.Theseinauguralad
4、dressesincludedinthisresearcharetheaddressesbyGeorgeWashington(1789),FranklinD.Roosevelt(1945),JohnF.Kennedy(1961),TheodoreRoosevelt(1905),andRichardM.Nixon(1973).Quantitativeandqualitativeanalysesgeneratedthefollowingfindings:First,ofthefivetypesofnounphrases,thetype“Head+Po
5、stmodification”ismostfrequentlyused,accountingfor33.1%ofthetotal.Amongthepostmodifiers,prepositionalphrasesaccountforthemajorpart.Moreover,theseprepositionalphrasesaremainly“of”phrases.Second,thetypeofnounphrasewithonlyonewordasthehead(“Head”)istheleastfrequenttype.Third,allo
6、fthesefivetypesofnounphraseappearmorefrequentlyintheobjectpositionofthesentences.Onlyasmallpercentageofthemfunctionassubjects,andevenfewerserveothergrammaticalfunctions,suchascomplementsandappositives.Qualitativeanalysishelpsfindthatpronounsandnominalclausesarecommonlyusedass
