1、TheNounPhrasesintheInauguralAddressesbyAmericanPresidentsAbstract:ThispaperstudiesthenounphrasesintheinauguraladdressesbyAmericanpresidentswithaviewtogainingamoreprofoundunderstandingofthefeaturesofthistypeoftexts.Anounphrasemayhaveacommonnoun,apropernounoraprono
2、unasitshead.Nominalsarealsoregardedasatypeofnounphrase.However,inthispaper,thenounphraseincludesonlycommonnounheadednounphrases.Theothertypesofnounphraseareexcludedforthesakeofthesizeofthisresearch.Tocarryouttheresearch,thepresentresearcherfirstfollowedQuirk’sthe
3、oryandclassifiedthenounphrasesintofivecategories:Head,Determiner+Head,(Determiner)+Premodification+Head,(Determiner)+Head+Postmodification,and(Determiner)+Premodification+Head+Postmodification.ThenthewriterchosefiveoriginalinauguraladdressesmadebyAmericanpresiden
4、tstodothisminiresearch.TheseinauguraladdressesincludedinthisresearcharetheaddressesbyGeorgeWashington(1789),FranklinD.Roosevelt(1945),JohnF.Kennedy(1961),TheodoreRoosevelt(1905),andRichardM.Nixon(1973).Quantitativeandqualitativeanalysesgeneratedthefollowingfindin
5、gs:First,ofthefivetypesofnounphrases,thetype“Head+Postmodification”ismostfrequentlyused,accountingfor33.1%ofthetotal.Amongthepostmodifiers,prepositionalphrasesaccountforthemajorpart.Moreover,theseprepositionalphrasesaremainly“of”phrases.Second,thetypeofnounphrase
6、withonlyonewordasthehead(“Head”)istheleastfrequenttype.Third,allofthesefivetypesofnounphraseappearmorefrequentlyintheobjectpositionofthesentences.Onlyasmallpercentageofthemfunctionassubjects,andevenfewerserveothergrammaticalfunctions,suchascomplementsandappositiv
