3、ntry.Thisistrulyanationalloss. Nineteenyearsago,almosttotheday,welostthreeastronautsinaterribleaccidentontheground.Butwe’veneverlostanastronautinflight.We’veneverhadatragedylikethis. Andperhapswe’veforgottenthecourageittookforthecrewoftheshuttle.Butthey
4、,theChallengerSeven,wereawareofthedangers,butovercamethemanddidtheirjobsbrilliantly.Wemournsevenheroes:MichaelSmith,DickScobee,JudithResnik,RonaldMcNair,EllisonOnizuka,GregoryJarvis,andChristaMcAuliffe. Wemourntheirlossasanationtogether. Forthefamilieso
5、ftheseven,wecannotbear,asyoudo,thefullimpactofthistragedy.Butwefeeltheloss,andwe’rethinkingaboutyousoverymuch.Yourlovedonesweredaringandbrave,andtheyhadthatspecialgrace,thatspecialspiritthatsays,“Givemeachallenge,andI’llmeetitwithjoy.”Theyhadahungertoexpl
6、oretheuniverseanddiscoveritstruths.Theywishedtoserve,andtheydid.Theyservedallofus. We’vegrownusedtowondersinthiscentury.It’shardtodazzleus.Butfortwenty-fiveyearstheUnitedStatesspaceprogramhasbeendoingjustthat.We’vegrownusedtotheideaofspace,and,perhapswef
7、orgetthatwe’veonlyjustbegun.We’restillpioneers.They,themembersoftheChallengercrew,werepioneers. AndIwanttosaysomethingtotheschoolchildrenofAmericawhowerewatchingthelivecoverageoftheshuttle’stake-off.Iknowit’shardtounderstand,butsometimespainfulthingslike
8、thishappen.It’sallpartoftheprocessofexplorationanddiscovery.It’sallpartoftakingachanceandexpandingman’shorizons.Thefuturedoesn’tbelongtothefainthearted;itbelongstothebrave.TheChallengercrewwaspullingusintothefuture,
