2、uchpoorermechanicalcharacteristicsthantherockmaterial,theyplayadecisiveroleintheoverallbehaviorofrockstructures,whosedeformationaswellasfailurepatternsaremainlygovernedbythoseofthejoints.Itfollowsthat,fromageomechanicalengineeringstandpoint,designmet
3、hodsofstructuresinvolvingjointedrockmasses,mustabsolutelyaccountforsuch‘‘weakness’’surfacesintheiranalysis.Themoststraightforwardwayofdealingwiththissituationistotreatthejointedrockmassasanassemblageofpiecesofintactrockmaterialinmutualinteractionthro
4、ughtheseparatingjointinterfaces.Manydesign-orientedmethodsrelatingtothiskindofapproachhavebeendevelopedinthepastdecades,amongthem,thewell-known‘‘blocktheory,’’whichattemptstoidentifypoten-tiallyunstablelumpsofrockfromgeometricalandkinematicalconsider
5、ations(GoodmanandShi1985;Warburton1987;Goodman1995).Oneshouldalsoquotethewidelyuseddistinctelementmethod,originatingfromtheworksofCundallandcoauthors(CundallandStrack1979;Cundall1988),whichmakesuseofanexplicitfinite-differencenumericalschemeforcomputi
6、ngthedisplacementsoftheblocksconsideredasrigidordeformablebodies.Inthiscontext,attentionisprimarilyfocusedontheformulationofrealisticmodelsfordescribingthejointbehavior.Sincethepreviouslymentioneddirectapproachisbecominghighlycomplex,andthennumerical
7、lyuntractable,assoonasaverylargenumberofblocksisinvolved,itseemsadvisabletolookforalternativemethodssuchasthosederivedfromtheconceptofhomogenization.Actually,suchaconceptisalreadypartiallyconveyedinanempiricalfashionbythefamousHoekandBrown’scriterion
8、(HoekandBrown1980;Hoek1983).Itstemsfromtheintuitiveideathatfromamacroscopicpointofview,arockmassintersectedbyaregularnetworkofjointsurfaces,maybeperceivedasahomogeneouscontinuum.Furthermore,owingtotheexistenceofjointpreferentialorientations,oneshould
