2、edgedthatrockmassesalwaysdisplaydiscontinuoussurfacesofvarioussizesandorientations,usuallyreferredtoasfracturesorjoints.Sincethelatterhavemuchpoorermechanicalcharacteristicsthantherockmaterial,theyplayadecisiveroleintheoverallbehaviorofrockstructures,whosedeformationaswell
3、asfailurepatternsaremainlygovernedbythoseofthejoints.Itfollowsthat,fromageomechanicalengineeringstandpoint,designmethodsofstructuresinvolvingjointedrockmasses,mustabsolutelyaccountforsuch‘‘weakness’’surfacesintheiranalysis.Themoststraightforwardwayofdealingwiththissituatio

5、fypoten-tiallyunstablelumpsofrockfromgeometricalandkinematicalconsiderations(GoodmanandShi1985;Warburton1987;Goodman1995).Oneshouldalsoquotethewidelyuseddistinctelementmethod,originatingfromtheworksofCundallandcoauthors(CundallandStrack1979;Cundall1988),whichmakesuseofanex
6、plicitfinite-differencenumericalschemeforcomputingthedisplacementsoftheblocksconsideredasrigidordeformablebodies.Inthiscontext,attentionisprimarilyfocusedontheformulationofrealisticmodelsfordescribingthejointbehavior.Sincethepreviouslymentioneddirectapproachisbecominghighly
