2、collectingimpulsesaresostrongthatotherinterestsaregladlysacrificedtothem.Ihavenevermadeanysacrificeinordertoacquiresomethingformywinelibrary,buthavebeencontenttoaccumulateasitwasconvenientandpossibleformetodoso.Hencetherearenorealtreasuresinmycollection,nosectionwhollycomplet
3、e,noevidenceofstrenuousanddeterminedeffort.Instead,Ihaveamiscellanyofthingsacquiredthroughremaindersales,secondhandstores,themanygiftsoffriends,andothersuchmeans.Mywidowwillhavenoextravaganceinthepursuitofwinebookstoreproachmefor.Butevenanenterpriseascasualasminemayamounttoso
4、methingafterasufficientlengthoftime,andIhavenowhadnearlyfiftyyearsofcollecting.So,ifwhatIhaveonmyshelvesiswithoutdistinction,somepartsofitareinterestingenoughtothosewhoknowthesubject.Andsincenooneknowsthefuture,itispossiblethatsomeitemsnowheldinnospecialregardmayturnout,inlat
5、eryears,tobehighlyprizedindeed.Whethertheyareornotisindifferenttome:Ihavehadmuchpleasureinthepresentpossessionandknowledgeofthesethings.Others,afterwards,maytoo.Ofonekindofwineliterature—thecommercialephemeraproducedbywineries,wineassociationsandothersuchentities—Ihavebeen,It
6、hink,amorethanordinarilyactivecollector.Butthismaterialconsistsofitemsthatcanhardlysustainevenaminimalbibliographicaldescriptionandso,withfewexceptions,suchitemsarenotparticularizedinthiscatalog.Nevertheless,Ithinktheymakeoneofthemostvaluablepartsofmycollection,eventhoughtthe
7、ydonotfigureinthelist.Theirextentisroughlyindicatedbytheenumerationoffilefoldersandboxfilesunder“Ephemera.”Sometitlesthatdofigureinthelistarenotaboutwinebutaboutfood(includingcookinganddiningout),orgin,orwhisky,orliqueurs.Someofthesebooksincludewineasasubject,althoughasubordi
