4、tanddecay,reservedforthehomeless,thepoor,minorities,andtheurbanunderclass.Thesecontrastsarequitegraphic,asanyonetouringourmetropolitanareascanattest,andrepresentsanextremecrisisofinequalityproducedbytheunevennatureofmetropolitandevelopmentandgrowth.T

5、hecitycontinuestoprovidetheprimesocio-spatialcontextwithinwhicheconomicandpoliticalelitesandordinarypeopleconstructandactouttheprocessesofdisinvestment,fiscalcrisis,andinnercity“renaissance.”Inrecentyears,scholarshavebeguntostudyredevelopmentwithaney

6、etowardclarifyingthelinksbetweenmacrostructuralprocesses,specificurbanredevelopmentefforts,andlocallylivedrealities.Thisreviewissuewillthereforeconsiderthesignificanceofurbanredevelopmentasafocusforurbantheoryandurbanresearch,outliningwhatsuchtheoret
