2、mpositionalityinnaturallanguage.MuchofthemotivationforhowGLmodelsmeaningcomesfromtwomajorlinesofinquiry:(1)Howisitthatweareabletodeployafinitenumberofwordsinourlanguageinanunboundednumberofcontexts?(2)Islexicalinformationandtherepresentationsusedincomposing
3、meaningsseparablefromourcommonsenseknowledge?Inthiscourse,weaddressthebasicquestionsofhowwordsencodecontext.Morespecifically,weexaminetheformalmechanismsresponsibleforargumentandadjunctselectioninlanguage.Weoutlineatheoryoflexicallytype-drivensemanticselect
4、ionandcompositionthatpermitsrestrictedpolymorphisms,whileexplainingthecreativeuseofwordsinnovelcontexts.BuildingexplicitlyonGenerativeLexicon'srichernotionofcompositionality,weexplorethetypelanguage,thelogic,andthecomputationalprocessingnecessarytomodelloca
5、contextinnaturallanguage.Wordsencodelocalcontextastypinginformation.Thecompositionarulesofthelanguagerefertothesetypes.Theoperationspossibleduringcompositionforthesetypesare:selection(matching),coercion,exploitation,andintroduction.Wepresentanalysesofmanywe
6、ll-knowngrammaticalconstructionsusingcombinationsofthesemechanisms.Wewillexploretheformalpropertiesofthelanguagesthataregeneratedbyinclusionoftheseselectionmechanisms,andreviewhowcross-linguisticselectionphenomenacorrelatewiththemodelpresentedhere.Oneofmain
7、themesthroughoutthecoursewillbeontheempiricaljustificationoftheoreticalmodelsinlinguistics,focusingonlexicalandcompositionalsemanticprocesses.Hence,wewillstudycorpusdataforeveryphenomenonpresented,andwewillexaminehowtheformalgeneralizationsfromthetheoryarev
