4、heworld,andthewidespreadbeliefintheimpendingmillenniumthatfosteredsomanyreformmovementsinthisperiod.Economic,political,andintellectualforcescombinedtoproduceanewexpansionistsurgeinthe1840sthatpushedtheRepublic’sboundariestothePacific,aprocessthatbroughtAmericansintocont
5、actwithotherculturesandpeoples.OVERVIEWThischapterexaminestheRepublic’sexpansiontothePacificOcean,itstransformationintoacontinentalnation,andhowthatdevelopmentinjectedtheslaveryissueintonationalpolitics.ItbeginswiththeexpansionoftheSiouxontothePlains,asareminderthatwest
6、wardexpansioninAmericanhistoryinvolvedmorethanAngloSaxonwhites.Moreover,thecaseoftheSiouxillustratestheimportanceofdifferentkindsoffrontiersintheprocessofexpansion.TheSioux’sconquestofthePlainsultimatelydependedontheacquisitionofgunsandhorses,andtheoutbreakofdiseaseepi
