2、系ABSTRACTAstudyofcompostversusconventionally-fertilizedvegetableplotswasconductedfor12yearsinasandyloamsoilnearTruro,NovaScotia.Thefertilitytreatmentshavebeenappliedannuallytosixrotationplotsplantedwithsixtoeightdifferentvegetablecrops.Thecompostsconsistofanimalmanure,f

3、oodwaste,yardwasteandstraworracetrackmanurebedding.Thispaperinvestigatedthelastyearofthestudy(2001),whichexaminedlevelsofnutrientsinsoil,leaftissue,theedibleportionoftheplant,andcropyields.Thefreshweightyieldsfromthesixplotsshowedthatthecomposttreatmentresultedinnumeric

4、ally,butnotsignificantly,higheryieldsforthecarrots,peppers,onionsandtomatoes,andsignificantlyhigheryieldsforgreenandyellowbeans.CauliflowerandBrusselssproutsyields,however,werehigherinthefertilizer-amendedplot.SoilswithcomposthadhigherpH,CEC,C,NandMehlich-3extractablele

5、velsofP,Ca,Mg,Mn,ZnandBcomparedwiththefertilizedplots.However,theincreasednutrientsinthecompost-amendedsoildidnotincreasethenutrientsintheleaftissueortheedibleportionoftheplant.Ofthe16elementstested,onlyPandKwerehigherinthefertilizer-amendedplantleaftissue,whilelevelsof

6、Pweresignificantlyhigherintheedibleportionoftheplant.Thisstudydemonstratedthatthelong-termuseofcompostcanproducesimilaryieldsandelementalanalysisformostcropsincompost-amendedandconventionally-fertilizedsoils.Thispaperreportstheresultsofthe1999and2000croppingyears.Cropyi

7、eldresponsewasinconsistentbetweenthetwoamendments;yieldsoftomatoesandbroccolivariedfromyeartoyear.Thefertilizedplots,however,producedhigherbeanyieldsandnumericallyhighercarrotandpepperyields,whilethecompost-amendedplotsproducedhigheronionyieldsinbothyears.。Therewerefews
