2、dyofcompostversusconventionally-fertilizedvegetableplotswasconductedfor12yearsinasandyloamsoilnearTruro,NovaScotia.Thefertilitytreatmentshavebeenappliedannuallytosixrotationplotsplantedwithsixtoeightdifferentvegetablecrops.Thecompostsconsistofanimalmanure,foodwaste,yardwasteandstraw
3、orracetrackmanurebedding.Thispaperinvestigatedthelastyearofthestudy(2001),whichexaminedlevelsofnutrientsinsoil,leaftissue,theedibleportionoftheplant,andcropyields.Thefreshweightyieldsfromthesixplotsshowedthatthecomposttreatmentresultedinnumerically,butnotsignificantly,higheryieldsfo
4、rthecarrots,peppers,onionsandtomatoes,andsignificantlyhigheryieldsforgreenandyellowbeans.CauliflowerandBrusselssproutsyields,however,werehigherinthefertilizer-amendedplot.SoilswithcomposthadhigherpH,CEC,C,NandMehlich-3extractablelevelsofP,Ca,Mg,Mn,ZnandBcomparedwiththefertilizedplot
5、s.However,theincreasednutrientsinthecompost-amendedsoildidnotincreasethenutrientsintheleaftissueortheedibleportionoftheplant.Ofthe16elementstested,onlyPandKwerehigherinthefertilizer-amendedplantleaftissue,whilelevelsofPweresignificantlyhigherintheedibleportionoftheplant.Thisstudydem
6、onstratedthatthelong-termuseofcompostcanproducesimilaryieldsandelementalanalysisformostcropsincompost-amendedandconventionally-fertilizedsoils.Thispaperreportstheresultsofthe1999and2000croppingyears.Cropyieldresponsewasinconsistentbetweenthetwoamendments;yieldsoftomatoesandbroccoliv
7、ariedfromyeartoyear.Thefertilizedplots,however,producedhigherbeanyieldsandnumericallyhighercarrotandpepperyields,whilethecompost-amendedplotsproducedhigheronionyieldsinbothyears.。Therewerefewsignificanteffectsoftreatmentsonplanttissuecontent;onlyFeandBwerehigherintheorganically-amen
