2、ier-basedFEL.Itisthereforenaturaltoconsiderhowsuchastudycouldbeperformedintheonlyexistinghigh-powerERL–theJLabUpgradeDriver.Wenotethatthecriticalelectronbeamparametersforsuchasystem–singlebunchemittanceandpeakcurrent–willconstraineitherorbothoftheselectionofwigglerand/orthepe

3、rformanceofthelaser.WehavedeterminedthattheBNLNISUSwigglerisintendedforoperationwithelectronbeamsinglebunchpropertiesverysimilartothoseproducedintheJLabUpgrade[1],andhavethereforedevelopedscenariosunderwhichtheNISUSwigglercouldbeoperatedinawell-optimizedmannerintheUpgradeDriv

4、er.ScenariosItisimmediatelyobviousthattheUpgradeDriverUVbypass[2]providesamplespacefortheinstallationandoperationofawigglerwithalengthofuptoatleast10m.ThisiscompatiblewithuseoftheNISUSwiggler.Moreover,theexistingUVend-candesignswouldallow–byleavingapairofmirror(HRandOC)slotsb

5、lank–injectionofaseedlaserbeamandextractionoftheamplifiedbeamusingnothingmorethantheUVopticaltransportsystem.Theonlyimplicationsofamplifierinstallationwouldthenbea)thepotentialinstallationofaseedlaser,wereonetobeusedandb)somemodificationoftheUVbacklegaxiselectronbeamtransport
