2、forhealthservicesaroundtheworld.NursesareinhighdemandnotonlyindevelopedcountriessuchastheUnitedStatesandtheUnitedKingdom,butalsoindevelopingcountries.TheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)estimatesthattheworldneedstoincreasethenumberofhealthworkersbymorethanfourmillionWHOdefinesh

3、ealthworkerstobeallpeopleengagedinactionswhoseprimaryintentistoenhancehealth,suchasdoctors,nurses,midwivesandothers.toachievetheglobalhealthgoalsetbytheMillenniumDevelopmentGoals(MDGs).Ultimately,thedemandfornursesisgrowingasanintegralpartoftheoverallhealthsystemtoprovideb

4、etterhealthcare.Toquicklymeetdemandsintheirdomesticmarkets,Westerncountrieshavestartedtointensifytheireffortstorecruitforeignnurses.Inresponsetotheglobalnurseshortage,moreAsiancountriesaresendingnursesabroadfollowingtheexampleofthePhilippines.IndiaandChinaarenowactivelysen

5、dingtheirnursesoverseasandseethecurrentdemandasabusinessopportunity,attemptingtoestablishtheirnamesinthemarket.AsnursemigrationisgainingmoreattentionwithinAsiancountries,severalnewinitiativesarebeingintroducedtofacilitatethefreemovementofnurseswithinAsiaandbeyond.Thispaper

6、aimstocapturethecurrentsituationofnursemigrationfromanAsianperspective.Asiancountriesaresourcesofnursesaswellashostsforforeignnurses.Theyalsoprovideopportunitiesforforeignnursestogainexperienceandknowledgetofacilitatemigrationtoothercountries.GlobalNurseShortageTheglobalnu

7、rseshortageissupportedbytheescalatingdemandfromdevelopedcountriessuchastheU.K.andtheU.S.TheU.S.,especially,isexpectingtoseeamoreintensifiedshortageofnursesinthefuture.In2000,theshortageofregisterednurseswasestimatedataround6percentor110,000.However,itisnowexpectedthatthesh
