3、estionnaires.Toinvestigatethedimensionsthoroughly,wetakeinformants’socialparameterssuchasage,sex,maritalstatus,occupation,livingarea,andknowledgeofforeignlanguagesintoconsideration.Thefindingsofalltheinvestigatedaspectsarepresentedandcross-culturallycompa
4、red.ThecommonbeliefisreassuredthattheAmericanwiththeirWesternculturalfeaturesprefernegativepolitenessstrategieswhereastheVietnamesewiththeirAsiaEasternonespreferpositivepolitenessstrategies.Thesocialdistanceamongvariouscommunicatingpartnershasmoreinfluenc
5、eontheVietnamesethanontheAmerican,whichinducesthemtoapplydifferentappropriatestrategies.However,interactionswithcommunicatingpartnersofdifferentsocialdistancestillremaintheAmericantobemorenegativepolitenessoriented.Thisstudy,hopefullycontributestohelpingi
