4、andlearning.InPartIII,weconsiderinfluentialspecificviewsheldbyeducatorsontherelationshipbetweenmotivationandlearning.PartI.MotivationandActionItseemsanaturalplacetobeginisbyasking,“Whatisitforapersontobemotivatedtoperformanaction?”ForWilliamAlston(1967),aphilosopher,

5、typicalcasesofmotivationincludethefollowing:doingsomethingtokeepapromise,doingsomethinginordertogetrevenge,doingsomethingbecauseitisthepolitethingtodo.Herethephrases“doingsomethingforapurpose,”“actingtorealizeanendorachieveagoal,”or“doingsomethinginordertodoso-and-so

6、”haveallbeenfoundusefulincharacterizingthetypicalcases.Alstonprefersthephrase“doingsomething(A)inordertobringaboutso-and-so”becauseitcannicelycoversthetypicalcases.Anditcanalsocoverthecasewhereapersongoestoameetingbecauseheisobligatedtodoso,butinwhichtheperson’sgoing
