3、rametricshapemodelswhicharedefinedbyexplicitequationsofshape[10],activecontoursaregeometricmodelsinwhichtheircoordinatesaretheparametersofthemodel.Thisresearchisuniqueinthattheyhavedevelopedanentirelynewsystemformodelingimagecontours,andtheyprovideanefficientandflexiblenumericalsolutionforthesyste
4、m.Aswillbedescribed,activecontourshavebecomeaninvaluablebasetoolforsegmentationandobjecttracking.Theenergyminimizationsystemdevelopedherediffersfromtraditionalcontourmodelingapproaches,whichtypicallyinvolvededgedetectionfollowedbysubjectiveinterpretationandedgeconnection[1].Themajorityofprevioused
5、gedetectiontechniquesdidnotemploydeterministicsystemformodelingcontours.SimpleedgedetectionmerelyinvolvestheuseoflinearoperatorssuchastheLaplacian,followedbythresholdingortheuseofCannyedgeselectionorsimilaralgorithms[8].TheHoughtransformhasalsobeenusedforshapedetectionandgeneralimagecharacterizati
6、on.Towardsthegoalsofimagesegmentationandunderstanding,manytechniqueshavebeenemployed,suchask-means,opticalflow,andregiongrowing[6,7].Thesemethods,however,arelimitedintheirinabilitytorecognizeandincorporatecontourcontinuity,animportantfactorintheselectionofmeaningfuledges,aswellasintheirinabilityto
