2、eivedthePulitzerPrizein1953forTheOldManandtheSea,andtheNobelPrizeinLiteraturein1954.ErnestHemingwayhismotherGraceHall,whomheneverforgavefordressinghimasalittlegirlinhisyouth,hadanoperaticcareerbeforemarryingDr.ClarenceEdmondsHemingway,hetaughthissontoloveout-doorl
3、ife.Hemingway’sfathertookhisownlifein1928afterlosinghishealttodiabetesandhismoneyintheFloridareal-estatebubble.HemingwayattendedthepublicschoolsinOakParkandpublishedhisearlieststoriesandpoemsinhishighschoolnewspaper.Uponhisgraduationin1917,Hemingwayworkedsixmonths
4、asareporterforTheKansasCityStar.HethenjoinedavolunteerambulanceunitinItalyduringWorldWarI.In1918hesufferedaseverelegwound.Forhisservice,HemingwaywastwicedecoratedbytheItaliangovernment.OnJuly8,1918,notyet19yearsold,hewasinjuredontheAustro-ItalianfrontatFossaltadiP
5、iave.DecoratedforheroismandhospitalizedinMilan,hefellinlovewithaRedCrossnurse,AgnesvonKurowsky,whodeclinedtomarryhim.Thesewereexperienceshewasnevertoforget.Afterrecuperatingathome,Hemingwayrenewedhiseffortsatwriting,forawhileworkedatoddjobsinChicago,andsailedforFr
6、anceasaforeigncorrespondentfortheTorontoStar.AdvisedandencouragedbyotherAmericanwritersinParis—F.ScottFitzgerald,GertrudeStein,EzraPound—hebegantoseehisnonjournalisticworkappearinprintthere,andin1925hisfirstimportantbook,acollectionofstoriescalledInOurTime,waspubl
7、ishedinNewYorkCity;itwasoriginallyreleasedinParisin1924.In1926hepublishedTheSunAlsoRises,anovelwithwhichhescoredhisfirstsolidsuccess.Apessimisticbutsparklingbook,itdeals17withagroupofaimlessexpatriatesinFranceandSpain—membersofthepostwarLostGeneration,aphrasethatH
