4、mia.Thesecancercellsmayalsomovetootherpartsofthebody,includingthebloodstream,wheretheycontinuetomultiplyandbuildup3.Althoughleukemiacanmakekidssick,mostofthetimeitistreatable,andkidsgetbetter.Almostallleukemiapatientsaretreatedwithchemotherapy,whichm
5、eansusinganti-cancerdrugs._Thechemotherapydrugsaregiventhroughacatheter,anarrowtubethatisinsertedintoabloodvessel,sometimesinthekid’supperchest._Chemotherapyquicklygoestowork,travelingthroughthebloodtothebonemarrow.There,thedrugscanattackthecancercel
6、ls.Afterseveralweeksofchemotherapy,manykidsbegintofeelbetter.Somechildrenwithleukemiawillalsohavetohaveradiationtherapy,too._Radiationtherapyusesinvisiblehigh-energywaves(similartoX-rays)tokillcancerouscells._Ifthecancerisn’tgettingbetterfromusingthe
7、usualamountsofchemotherapyandradiation,thenkidwithleukemiawillprobablyneedmoretreatment—withhigherdosesofchemotherapyandradiationtofinallykillthecancercells.Butthisheavy-dutytreatmentwillalsoharmthenormalcellsinthekid’sbonemarrowtoo,andthebonemarroww
