3、woalternativesforreadingvirtualmaps:(1)ahapticmouseand(2)anembossedmapplacedonatouchpad.Forbothoptionstactile,aswellaskinaestheticandauditoryinformation,isprovided.ExperimentsontheusefulnessforthetaskoffindingaseriesofUSAstateswereperformed,andtheydemonstratedthattheadditionoftactileinformation,

4、initsrespectivestandardform,didnotmeananyoronlylittleimprovementoverkinaestheticandauditoryinformationalone.Infurtherexperimentspossibleimprovementsofthetactileinformationwerecompared.Itwasfoundthatthetactileinformationforthehapticmouse(theVTPlayer)couldbeimprovedbychangesinthesoftwarerenderingt

5、hevirtualmaps.Theproblemswiththeuseofacomputermousewithoutvisualfeedback,probablyduetodissimilaritiesbetweenthemovementswithwhichtheusermovedthemouseandthemotionsofthecursorinthevirtualscenecanbereducedbymakingthetwomotionsmoresimilar.Continuedexperimentsonthetactileinformationfortheembossedmapo

6、natouchpad(theViewPlusequipment)concernedcomparisonsbetweenformsproducedbytheViewPlusembossmentprinterandformsobtainedbyatraditionalmethodwithhigherspatialresolution(swellpaper).Further,thediscriminabilityoftexturesproducedbythe11embossmentprinterwasinvestigated.Atendencyforimprovementwiththeswe

7、llpapermethodwasobtained.Theconclusionsarethatbothalternativeshavepotentialsasaidsforvisuallyimpairedpeople'sreadingofvirtualmaps,butthattheycanbeimprovedbychangesinthetactileinformationtheyprovide.IntroductionTactile(emboss
