¡¡¡¡HuaShanisthehighestofChinasfivesacredmountains.Itis120kilometerseastofXian.Ithasfivepeaksthatresemblethepetalsofaflower.Thehighestpeakis2180meters(7085feet)¡£¡¡¡¡WehadhaddiscussionsaboutgoingtoHuaShanwithsomegraduatestudentsfr-omComputerScience.Thatdidntworkoutduetochangesinschedulesonbothsides.Also,theywereplanningtodotheclimbatnighttobeabletoreachthepeakatsunrise.Thatdidnotappealtous.Wewantedtospendanightonthemountain.Fransdepartmentarrangedatripforus,makingreservationsatthesimplehotelontheNorthPeak.Theysenttwograduatestudentstoaccompanyus,thoughtheyhadnotbeentoHuaShanbefore.Wemetthemat8:00onSaturdaymorningandtookataxitothetrainstation.Thereweaskedaroundandlocatedamini-bus.Thebusmadeacoupleofstops.Onewastoseeapresentationaboutthetraditionalmedicinesgrownonthemountainandachancetobuysomeofthem.ItprobablywouldhavebeeninterestingifweunderstoodChinese.Ourguidesgaveusthegeneraloutlineaboutwhatwassaid.Theotherstopwasaquicklunchstop.¡¡¡¡TherearetwoapproachestoHuaShan.[Chineseproverb:¡°ThereisoneroadandonlyoneroadtoHuaShan,¡±meaningthatsometimesthehardwayistheonlyway.]Thewestentranceinvolves10kilometersofwalkingonaroadbeforeyoustartclimbing.Wewentwiththeeastentrance,wherethebusbringsyoutothebaseofacablecarthatgoesuptothe1500meterNorthPeak.OurplanwastowalkuptotheNorthPeak,thenclimbtothefourotherpeaksthenextdayandtakethecablecardown.¡¡¡¡Westartedtheclimbintheearlyafternoon.Thepathconsistsofstonestepswithroughchainlinkhandrailsinthenarrowestareas(weworeourbicyclingglovesforhandprotection)¡£Physically,itismorelikeclimbingthestepsofaskyscraperthantrailsathome.However,thetemperaturewasabout95degreesandtherewasnotmuchshade.Webroughtlotsofwater,includingsomebottlesthatwefrozeandsomeGatoradethatwegotatthefancydepartmentstoreindowntownXian.Thereareplentyofrefreshmentstandsalongthewaywhereyoucanbuybottledwater,theChineseequivalentofGatorade,andotherdrinksorsnacksatapremiumprice.¡¡¡¡WereachedtheNorthPeakbefore4:00PMandrestedatthehotel.Ourroomwas
basic,butcomfortableandcleanenough.Becausewaterisscarceonthemountain,therewereneithershowersnorsinksavailableforwashing.Inthatsensetheexperiencefeltlikecamping,butweweresleepinginabigtent!¡¡¡¡Afterdinneratthehotelrestaurant,wespentsometimetalkingwithourguides.WewereabitsurprisedtofindthattheyboththinkofJapannegatively,butliketheU.S.ItseemsthatJapansWWIIbehaviorinChinahasnotbeenforgotten,andisemphasizedinschool.¡¡¡¡Wesawabeautifulsunsetandwatchedtheskybecomeresplendentwiththousandsofstars,includingtheMilkyWaygalaxy.ThiswastheclearestskythatwehaveseeninChina.ThefreshairatHuaShanisatreat!¡¡¡¡Ourguideshadbothbeenplanningtogetupat4:00AMtowatchthesunrise.FranandImadesleepapriority.Wedidhappentowakeupabitbeforesunrise(ourroomfacedeast)andwentoutsidetowatchtheskybecomerosy.Ironically,ourguidesmissedthesunrisebecausetheyhadstayeduplatewatchingtheEuropeansoccerchampionshipsonthetelevisionintheirroom¡¡¡¡Theplanforthedaywastoclimbtheotherfourpeaks,butwereservedtherighttoshortentheroute.ThefirstpartwasasteepclimbtoMiddlePeak.AfterthelowNorthPeak,alltheothersareatroughly20xxmeters.TherewerecrowdsonthewaytoMiddlePeak-mostlyChinesehikersbutwedidseeafewotherwaiguo(foreigners)aswell.¡¡¡¡WevisitedtwoTaoisttemplesenroutetoMiddlePeak.Eachonehadanaltarwithincenseandofferingsoffruit.Thefriendlymonksinvitedustosayaprayerortosendblessingstolovedones.Franacceptedtheirinvitation.Atthefirsttemple,shelitincensesticksandkneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarsayingasilentprayerforoursafejourneytothevarioussummitsofHuaShan(theprayerwasanswered)¡£Atthesecondtemple,shekneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarandsentsilentblessingstoseveralfriendswhoareexperiencingchallengingsituationsintheirlivesatpresent.Aftereachblessing,sheleanedforwardandthemonkstruckadrum.¡¡¡¡AfterMiddlePeak,thecrowdsgotmuchthinner.ThenextwasEastPeak,which
hadasteepladderclimbingrock.Franwasdubiousaboutthisascent,butrealizedthattheladderwasntsobadandwentforit.Thatwasagooddecisionbecausewewerethenabletodoaloopandthetrailsgotalmostemptyatthispoint.Afterskirtingthetopofacliffwithasteepdropoffonbothsides,wehadapleasantwalktoSouthPeakandWestPeak.Therewasevenasmallamountofdirttrail!ThesummitofSouthPeakwasthehighestpointonHuaShan,soofcourseweaskedanotherhikertotakeaphotoofourguidesandus.Theviewsfr-omthetopsofeachpeakwerebeautiful.HuaShanandthesurroundingmountainsareveryruggedandremindussomewhatofhikinginthesouthwesternUnitedStatesortheSierras.¡¡¡¡Wetookaroutethateventuallybroughtustothemainlinereturningdownfr-omMiddletoNorthPeak.Wewerehappytohaveascendedeachofthefivepeaks(petals)ofFlowerMountain.¡¡¡¡Bycablecar(thelongestinAsia)£¬itwasjust7minutesdowntotheparkentrance.Wecaughtashuttlebusintotown,thentransferredtoabusforXian.¡¡¡¡Ourguidestoldusthatwehadwalkedupanddownatotalof4000stairs!Weweregladthatwedidnothavethisinformationwhenwestarted.Forthreedaysafterreturninghome,oursorelegmusclesinstructedustotaketheelevatortoourfifthfloorapartmentratherthanclimbingthestairs.¡¡¡¡Ó¢Óïµ¼ÓδÊÉÂÎ÷3¡¡¡¡HuaqingPoolissituatedabout35kilometreseastofthecityofXi¡®an.Historically,theWesternZhoudynastysawtheconstructionoftheLiPalaceonthespot.IntheQindynastyapoolwasbuiltwithstones,andwasgiventhenameLishanTang(theLishanHotSpring).ThesitewasextendedintoapalaceintheHandynasty,andrenamedtheLiPalace(theResortPalace).IntheTangdynasty,LiShimin(EmperorTaiZong)orderedtoconstructtheHotSpringPalace,andEmperorXuanZonghadawalledpalacebuiltaroundLishanMountainintheyearof747.ItwasknownastheHuaqingPalace.ItalsohadthenameHuaqingPoolonaccountofitslocationonthehotsprings.¡¡¡¡HuaqingPoolislocatedatthefootoftheLishanMountain,abranchrangeoftheQinlingRanges,andstands1,256metreshigh.Itiscoveredwithpinesandcypresses,
lookingverymuchlikealikeadarkgreengallopinghorsefr-omalongdistance.SoithasthenameoftheLishanMountain(Limeansablackhorse).¡¡¡¡TheTangdynastyEmperorXuanZongandhisfavouritelady,YangGuiFeiusedtomaketheirhomeatFrostDriftingHallinwinterdays.Whenwintercame,snowflakeswerefloatingintheair,andeverythinginsightwaswhite.However,theycameintothawimmediatelyinfrontofthehall.Itowedagreatdealtothelukewarmvapourrisingoutofthehotspring.ThisistheFrostDriftingHallthatgreetsustoday.¡¡¡¡ClosebytheFrostDriftingHallliestheNineDragonPool.Accordingtolegend,theCentralShaanxiPlainwasoncestrickenbyaseveredroughtintheveryremotepast.Thus,bytheorderoftheJadeEmperor(theSupremeDeityofHeaven),anolddragoncameattheheadofeightyoungones,andmaderainhere.Yetwhenthedisasterwasjustabating,theyloweredtheirguardsomuchthatitbecameseriousagain.Inafitofanger,theJadeEmperorkepttheyoungdragonsundertheJadeCauseWay(ÓñµÌ),withtheMorningGlowPavilionandtheSunsetPavilionbuiltatbothendsofitrespectively,tomaketheyoungdragonsspoutcleatwateralldaylongtomeettheneedsoflocalirrigation.Besides,hehadtheolddragonconfinedtothebottomoftheRoaringDragonWatersidePavilionsituatedattheupperendoftheJadeCauseway,andobligedhimtoexercisecontrolovertheyoung.¡¡¡¡TheNine-BendCorridorwestoftheNineDragonPoolleadsdirectlytotheMarbleBoat,whichresemblesadragonboatonthewatersurface.IntheMarbleBoatliestheNineDragonTang(theNineDragonHotSpringwhereEmperorXuanZongusedtotakebaths).Attheheadofhiscourtladiesandhundredsofhisofficials,hewouldcometotheHuanqingPalacetospendhiswinterdaysinOctoberoftheLunarcalendarandreturntoChang¡®anCityastheyeardrewtoitsclose.TheNineDragonHotSpringwasoriginallybuiltwithcrystaljade,whosesurfacewasdecoratedwiththecarvingsoffish,dragons,birdsandflowers.Inittwinlotusflowersalsocarvedwithwhitejadecouldbeseenaswell.Thespringwaterwelledfr-omthebreakofanearthenjar,andspouteduptothelotusflowers.HencethenameLotusFlowerTang(theLotusFlowerHotSpring).
