3、eesomecollegesarequicklyresponsivetothefindingsofaccountantsandconsultants,butthatgenerallythereislittleorganisational‘space’ortimeavailableinFEforongoingresearch.Thecultureofthenowhasthreeinter-relatedaspects.Firstlythereisaninstitutionaldimension.AllthoseinFEareharriedbyfreneticstructural

4、instability.Thereareendlessnationalandlocalpolicychangesandanauditcultureofincessantfinancialandcurriculuminspections.Internalrestructuringandpersonnelchangeappeartobeafrequentresponsetothesepressures.Cumulatively,thesefactorsgivelittletimeorspaceforreflectionortothedevelopmentofameasuredre

5、sponsetochange.Responsestendtobeinchoate,shorttermandunsustainableand,thus,servetomanufacturefurtherinstability.Secondlythereareideologicalbarriers,stemmingfromafalseperceptionofthemanagementofrisk,whichmakeresearchanunattractiveoptionforthoseplanningthestrategicdirectionofcolleges.Inessenc

6、etheauditculturefavoursstandardisationandeasilyreplicableregimeswhereassuccess,withintherisksocietyrequires“…organisationalcultureswhichenhanceindividualflexibilityandresponsiveness”(Brotherton,1998).Thirdlythen,despitetherhetoric,colleges,infact,tendnottotreattheiremployeesastheirmostvalua
