2、urbanDetroit,ofbriberychargeslastyear,hisinitialreactionwastowriteofftheepisodeasaterriblemistakethatatleasthadbeencorrected.“Prosecutorscanmakemistakesforinnocentreasons,”Mr.Marlingasaid.“Iknowthatfirsthand.”Butashelooksbackatthecase,Mr.Marlinga,60,whowaschargedwhilehewasaDemocraticcandidatefor

3、Congress,nolongerhassuchconfidenceintheintegrityofthelegalsystem.“WastheresomeextrapressureontheUnitedStatesattorney’soffice,whetherarticulatedortacitlyunderstood,bytheirsuperiorsinWashingtonwhowouldnotlookfavorablyupontheofficeifthiscasewasnotpursued?”heasked.“Ihavetowonder.”Thatkindofsecondgue

4、ssinghassurfacedwithincreasingfrequencyinrecentweeksinstatesincludingAlabama,Maryland,Michigan,NewJersey,PennsylvaniaandWisconsin.SincethedismissalsofeightUnitedStatesattorneys,locallawyers,politicians,editorialwriters,membersofCongressanddefendantsarequestioningwhattheysayisapatternofinvestigat

5、ingDemocrats.Theypointtoinquiriesthatdragonforyearsbutendwithnocharges,anacquittalorconvictionsforrelativelymodestinfractions.TheJusticeDepartmentdoesnotkeepstatisticsonthepoliticalpartiesofthesubjectsofitscorruptioninvestigations,officialssaid,sothereisnocomprehensivewaytodeterminethebreakdowno

6、rwhetherthecasesdisproportionatelyinvolveDemocrats.DepartmentofficialspointoutthatseveralprominentRepublicanshavebeenprosecutedinrecentyears,includingformerRepresentativesRandyCunninghamofCaliforniaandBobNeyofOhio.Somecritics,though,aresuggestingthatthedepartmentdismissedsomeprosecutorstosquelch
