2、dforstraightnessbeforeincorporatingthemintoastraightwall.Bendingiseasilyachievedbyplacingthebaleedge-downwithoneendonachockofsomekindandapplyingforcewithone’sknee.Pre-trimmingthebalesThefoldedfacesofthebalesshouldbetrimmedbeforeplacingtheminthewall,becausethecutfacesaremucheasiertoplastera

3、ndtheyaremoreeasilycutbefore,ratherthanafter,erection;aftererectionthetie-downwiresinterferewithtrimming.Baleswithneatlytrimmedfacesarealsomoreeasilyalignedtoformastraight,flatwall.Totrimthefoldedfaces,laybalesfolded-face-uponaflatsurface.Thebalescanbeplacedinalayeraslargeasdesired,butitis

4、besttohavethewidthsmallenoughthatthecentreofthelayercanbereachedwithoutwalkingonthebales.Trimthebalesenoughtoproduceacleanlycutface,andkeepthebalestoauniformthicknesswiththefacesasflatasreasonablypossible.Thistrimmingwillreducethethicknessofbales,butusuallyonlybyabout20mm,whichcanbeaccommo

5、datedreadily.24PracticalstrawbalebuildingSplittingbalesTomakeapart-bale,thebaleisnotactually‘cut’;thebaleisre-tied,theoriginaltiescut,andthebaleseparatedintotwopieces.Notethereferenceto‘part-bales’,not‘half-bales’,becauseeachpart-baleshouldbetailoredtofitthespaceavailable(seepage35).Thread

6、balingtwinethroughthebaleusingthebaleneedleatthedesirednewbalelength.Ifbothpiecesofbalearetobepreserved,insertonepieceoftwineinthefirstpassoftheneedle,andanotherpieceonthewithdrawaloftheneedle,buttakecarenottooverlapthetwopiecesoftwine.Practiceisthebestmethodoflearningthetechnique,butessen
