2、ChardphoomViratjandrABSTRACTSoilreinforcementisapracticalsolutiontoconstructionoverweaksoils.Applicationofthekinematicapproachoflimitanalysistoreinforcedsoilisreviewed,bothfortraditionalreinforcementwithstripsorsheetsofgeosyntheticmaterialandforfiber-reinforcedsoils.Thedevelopm
3、entofthefailurecriteriaforisotropicandanisotropicfibercompositesispresented.Thekinematicapproachisappliedtoevaluatinglimitloadsonreinforcedfoundationsoils.Patternsofreinforcedsoilfailuredeterminedinearlierlaboratorytestsareutilized.Amethodforpracticalcalculationsofthebearingcap
4、acityispresented,andthedepthofplacementofthegeosyntheticlayersisrecommended.Themethodisextendedtotwo-layerfoundationsoilswiththeupperlayerreinforcedeitherwithgeogridsorfibers,orwithboth.Preliminaryresultsindicatethatfiberreinforcementcanbeaseffectiveasgeogrids.Applicationofthis
5、conceptisenvisionedinconstructionofunpavedroads,temporaryaircraftparkingfacilities,orwhenplacingfootingsoverweaksoils.Foundationsoilswithcombinedreinforcementincludelayersofgeogridplacedinthefiber-reinforcedfill,toproduceaslabcapableofcarryinglargeloads.Toanalyzethelimitstateof
6、theslab,amodeloffiber-reinforcedsoilwasusedfirsttodeterminethepropertiesofthefiber-reinforcedfill.Thecontributionofthegeogridtothestrengthoftheslabwasthendeterminedbyconsideringtwopossiblemodesoffailure:slipandtensilerupture.Theframeworkofthekinematicapproachoflimitanalysiswasu
