3、ectsandisaffectedbywiderdrivingforcesandeconomicissueswasalsodiscussed.Thesymposium’sfindingsarepublishedinthisSUMMARYSTATEMENTandaseparateprinteddocument,CONCLUSIONSANDACTIONS.BackgroundTheNorthwestRegionalCommitteeoftheRGS-IBGfirstproposedthesymposiumear
4、lyin2006when‘globalwarming’wasbecomingthehottesttopicontheplanet.AttheSociety’sAGMinJuneofthatyearinLondon,oneoftheFellowsaskedwhattheRGS-IBGwasdoingtoaddresstheissueofclimatechange.Theinternationalandnationaldimensionswerebeingmuchtalkedabout,oftenagainst
5、thesometimesbafflingcounterargumentsofthosewhothought,paradoxically,thatthepredictionswerejustsomuch‘hotair’.Anyregionalpicturewas,atbest,embryonic.Ayearlaterthingshavemovedonandthisconferencewasoneofthefirsttoexamineindetailthepotentialforclimatechangeand
6、itspossibleregionalimpactsaswellasdiscussprospectiveresponsestoarangeoffuturepossibilities.Theinterveningchangeinemphasesmeantthatforthepurposesofthisconference,theassertionthatclimateischangingcouldbetakenasreadandtheprocessbeingacceleratedbyhumanactivity
