3、erssubmittedforpublication.Thisisnotonlyarequisiteforresearchpapers,butalsoforindustrialpapersaswell,althoughthisempiricalaspectmaywellbeintheformofcasestudies.Thereasonforthisistheneedforvalidationofassumptionsorotherclaims,andtheverificationofresultsinthepaper.Ins
4、oftwareengineering,asopposedtosomeotherfieldsincomputerscienceandengineering,itisoftennoteasytoverifyyourresultsanalytically,andsoanempiricalstudymaybetheonlywaytoprovidesuchverification.Reviewersdonotalwaysinsistonafully-fledgedexperiment,butdorequireatleastalightwei
5、ghtempiricalstudy,stillcarefullythoughtoutandexecuted.Also,mostreviewerswillnolongersimplyaccepttheresultsofempiricalstudyorfullexperiment,butinsistuponsomesortofstatisticalanalysistodemonstratestatisticalsignificanceoftheresults.Ihavebeensomewhatsurprisedbytheneces
6、sityforstatisticalsignificance,butexperimentalresultsthatappearcompellingoftenfailtobestatisticallysignificant;youcantjusteyeballthedataandbeconfidentthatitcouldntcomeoutthatwaybycoincidence.Itendtobefairlytheoreticalinmygeneralapproachtoresearch,andsoyearsagoIwasnott
