4、importantintermediatestepinthisprocess.ItisshownhowXMLandcorrespondingtechnologiescanbeusedfortheformalizationandvisualizationofanexistingPLCprogram.I.INTRODUCTIONProgrammableLogicControllers(PLCs)areaspecialtypeofcomputersthatareusedinindustrialandsafetycriticalapplica

5、tions.ThepurposeofaPLCistocontrolaparticularprocess,oracollectionofprocesses,byproducingelectricalcontrolsignalsinresponsetoelectricalprocess-relatedinputssignals.ThesystemscontrolledbyPLCsvarytremendously,withapplicationsinmanufacturing,chemicalprocesscontrol,machining

6、,transportation,powerdistribution,andmanyotherfields.Automationapplicationscanrangeincomplexityfromasimplepaneltooperatethelightsandmotorizedwindowshadesinaconferenceroomtocompletelyautomatedmanufacturinglines.Withthewideningoftheirapplicationhorizon，PLCprogramsarebeing

7、subjecttoincreasedcomplexityandhighqualitydemandsespeciallyforsafety-criticalapplications.ThegrowingcomplexityoftheapplicationswithinthecomplianceoflimiteddevelopmenttimeaswellasthereusabilityofexistingsoftwareorPLCmodulesrequiresaformalapproachtobedeveloped[I].Ensuring
