3、datamanipulationlanguageinstructions.WeaddaseparatetimecomponentintothePLCprocessorscantimetohandledatabaseupdates,backup,integrityenforcementanddataarchivalissues.1.IntroductionAprogrammablelogiccontroller(PLC)isaspecial-purposecomputerusedwithinreal-timescientificcomputingsystems,andindustr
4、ialcontrolsystems,say,theautomatedcontrolofafactory'smachinery-therunningexampleusedinthispaper.ThispaperisapositionpaperthatproposesaPLCdatabasesystemanddiscussesitsfeatures.Indoingso,wetouchbaseswithanumberofbasicdatabasetopics,and,thus,frequentlyrefertootherworkfordetails.PLCsaremostlyused
5、inmanufacturingenvironments-hence,thechoiceofourrunningexample.However,PLCsarealsousedinscientificapplicationsforsignaldatagatheringandpreliminarydataprocessing.Thus,wethinkthatforsomescientificapplications,aPLCdatabasemayalsoserveasalocal/transientpartofalargerscientificdatabase.Withtherapid
6、advancesincomputerhardwareandfallingmemoryprices,inrecentyears,thecapabilitiesofthenewPLCsinthemarketplacehavebeenincreasingdramatically.ThispaperisapositionpaperthatarguesthataPLCsoftwarecannowcontainadatabasesystemtogreatlyincreaseitsfunctionality.WeproposethearchitectureinFigure1asthearchi
