3、hesystemservicesandapplicationcomponents.Keywords:j2ee;component;Distributed;DynamicDeployment;1IntroductionInrecentyears,wehaveseenasignificantgrowthincomponent-basedenterpriseapplicationdevelopment.TheseapplicationsaretypicallydeployedoncompanyIntranetsorontheInternetandarecharacterizedbyhig

4、htransactionvolume,largenumbersofusersandwideareaaccess.Traditionallytheyaredeployedinacentrallocation,usingserverclusteringwithloadbalancing(horizontalpartitioning)tosustainuserload.However,horizontalpartitioninghasbeenshownveryefficientonlyinreducingapplication-relatedoverheadsofuser-perceiv

5、edresponsetimes,withouthavingmucheffectonnetwork-inducedlatencies.Verticalpartitioning(e.g.,runningwebtierandbusinesstierinseparateVMs)hasbeenusedforfaultisolationandloadbalancingbutitissometimesimpracticalduetosignificantrun-timeoverheads(evenifonewouldkeepthetiersonafastlocal-areanetwork)rel

6、atedtoheavyuseofremoteinvocations.Recentwork[14]inthecontextofJ2EEcomponentbasedapplicationshasshownviabilityofverticalpartitioninginwide-areanetworkswithout19incurringtheaforementionedoverheads.Thekeyconclusionsfromthatstudycanbesummarizedasfollows:•Usingproperlydesignedapplications,verticald

7、istributionacrosswide-areanetworksimprovesuser-perceivedlatencies.•Wide-areaverticallayeringrequiresreplicationofapplicationcomponentsandmaintainingconsistencybetweenreplicas.•Additionalreplicasmaybedeployeddynamicallytohandlenewrequest
