2、hispaperistodescribeexperimentalandanalyticalresearchonheatstraighteningasappliedtoplatesandtopresentrelatedengineeringcriteriaforitsuse.Anexperimentalprogramwasconductedtoevaluatetheresponseofplatestoheatstraighteningandtoidentifyimportantparametersinfluencingbehavior.Over300heatswereappliedto

3、avarietyofplates.Theprimaryfactorsinfluencingstraighteningweretheangleoftheveeheat,steeltemperatureduringheating,andexternalrestrainingforces.Theplasticrotationafterheatingwasdirectlyproportionaltotheseparameters.Toaidengineersinpredictingplatemovementsduringheatstraightening,asimplemathematica

4、lformulawasdeveloped.Thisequationrelatestheaverageplasticrotationperveeheattoveeangle,steeltemperature,magnitudeofrestrainingforce,coefficientofthermalexpansion,andyieldstress.Theformulacompareswelltotheexperimentaldataandisthefirstsimpleformulaavailablethatincludestheparametersofheatingtempera

5、tureandmagnitudeofrestrainingforce.Theformofthisanalyticalapproachalsowilllenditselftowardextensions,includingthebehaviorofrolledshapes,axiallyloadedmembers,andcompositeandnoncompositegirders.INTRODUCTIONThefundamentalelementofanystructuralsteelshapeistheflatplate.Damagetobridgestructuresconsis
