4、ientlyperfect.Robotresearchersfeltcertainthatthesensordrivenmachinestheywereevolvingwouldberequiredforhostileenvironments,suchasforwinningprimaryenergyresources.Theyhoped,butcouldnotbecertain,thattheircostwouldbeincreasinglyjustifiedinnormalindustrialmanufacture.Itisnowclear

5、thattheuseofsensorstocontrolmachinescontinuously,oralternativelytoverifytheiroperation,canbehighlycosteffective,atleastinparticularareasofbatchmanufacture,andwillbethebasisofanimportantfutureindustry.Examplesofsuchareasare:sensingsystemstomonitortoolconditioninmetalremovalma

6、chines;forceandtorquesensingforrobotassemblysystems,automaticinspectionmachinesusingvisualtechniquesfor100%checkingofpanelsandcastingsbetweenotheroperations;andtrackingsensorsforarcweldingandseamsealingbyrobot.Todealeconomicallywithdifferentapplicationslikethesethesensorsyst
