2、arnavigationsystemsprovidedrivinginstructionsintheformofmaps,pictograms,andspokenlanguage.However,theyaresofarnotabletosupportlandmark-basednavigation,whichisthemostnaturalnavigationconceptforhumansandwhichalsoplaysanimportantroleforupcomingpersonalnavigationsystems.Inordertoprovidesuchanavig
3、ation,thefirststepistoidentifyappropriatelandmarks–ataskthatseemstoberathereasyatfirstsightbutturnsouttobequitepretentiousconsideringthechallengetodeliversuchinformationfordatabasescoveringhugeareasofEurope,NorthernAmericaandJapan.Inthispaper,weshowapproachestoextractlandmarksfromexistingGISd
4、atabases.Sincethesedatabasesingeneraldonotcontaininformationonbuildingheightsandvisibility,weshowhowthiscanbederivedfromlaserscanningdata.1INTRODUCTIONModerncarnavigationsystemshavebeenintroducedin1995inupperclasscarsandarenowavailableforpracticallyanymodel.Theyarerelativelycomplexandmaturesy
5、stemsabletoproviderouteguidanceinformofdigitalmaps,drivingdirectionpictograms,andspokenlanguagedrivinginstructions(Zhao,1997).Lookingbacktothefirstbeginningsintheearly1980s,manynontrivialproblemshavebeensolvedsuchasabsolutepositioning,provisionofhugenavigablemaps,fastroutingandreliableroutegu
6、idance.However,theoriginalconceptofdeliveringtheinstructionshasnotchangedverymuch.Still,spokenlanguageinstructionsusearelativelysmallsetofcommands(like’turnrightnow’),whichonlyrefertopropertiesofthestreetnetwork.Thisisnotoptimal,sincei)featuresofthestreetnetworktypicallyarenotvisiblefromagrea
