3、tsinaviation.OrvilleandWilburWrighthadalwayshadacompellinginterestinaeronauticsandmechanics.Asyoungboystheyearnedmoneybymakingandsellingkitesandmechanicaltoys.Later,theydesignedanewspaper-foldingmachine,builtaprintingpress,andoperatedabicycle-repairshop.In1896,whentheyreadabou
4、tthedeathofOttoLilienthal,thebrother′sinterestinflightgrewintoacompulsion.Lilienthal,apioneerinhang-gliding,hadcontrolledhisglidersbyshiftinghisbodyinthedesireddirection.ThisideawasrepellenttotheWrightbrothers,however,andtheysearchedformoreefficientmethodstocontrolthebalanceof
5、airbornevehicles.In1900and1901,theWrightstestednumerousglidersanddevelopedcontroltechniques.Thebrothers′inabilitytoobtainenoughliftpowerfortheglidersalmostledthemtoabandontheirefforts.Afterfurtherstudy,theWrightbrothersconcludedthatthepublishedtablesofairpressureoncurvedsurfac
6、esmustbewrong.Theysetupawindtunnelandbeganaseriesofexperimentswithmodelwings.Becauseoftheirefforts,theoldtableswererepealedintimeandreplacedbythefirstreliablefiguresforairpressureoncurvedsurfaces.Thiswork,inturn,madeitpossibleforthemtodesignamachinethatwouldfly.In1903theWright
7、sbuilttheirfirstairplane,whichcostlessthanonethousanddollars.Theyevendesignedandbuilttheirownsourceofpropulsion-alightweightgasolineengine.WhentheystartedtheengineonDecember17,theairplanepulsatedwildlybeforetakingoff.Theplanemanagedtostayaloftfortwelveseconds,however,anditflew
