3、ncesoftheRiseofSeaLevelsAmplifiedstormsurges.Coastalstormsoftencausestormsurges,whichoccurwhenhighwindspushwaterinland.Withrisingseas,stormsurgesoccurontopofanelevatedwaterlevelandreachfartherinland,withpotentiallycatastrophicdamagetohomesandinfrastructure.Consequence
4、softheRiseofSeaLevelsPermanentinundation.Manylow-lyingcoastallandareasareexpectedtobegraduallysubmergedbyrisingsealevels.Ariseoftwofeetabovetoday'ssealevelwouldputmorethan$1trillionofpropertyandstructuresintheU.S.atriskofinundation,withroughlyhalfofthatvalueconcentrat
5、edininFlorida.ConsequencesoftheRiseofSeaLevelsSaltwaterintrusion.Saltwatercanreachfurtherintocoastalgroundwatersourcesassealevelrises,increasingthesalinityoffreshwaterusedfordrinkingandagriculture.MyestimatefortheseatoriseinChinaandaroundtheworldLengthrecordsformtheon
6、lydirectevidenceofglacierchangethathaspotentialglobalcoveragebefore1950.Wecalculateagloballyrepresentativesignalfrom349glacierlengthrecords.Bymeansofscaling,wededuceaglobalglaciervolumesignal,thatiscalibratedonthemass-balanceandgeodeticobservationsoftheperiod1950–2005
7、.Wefindthattheglaciercontributiontosea-levelrisewas8.4 ± 2.1 cmfortheperiod1800–2005and9.1 ± 2.3 cmfortheperiod1850–2005.MyestimatefortheseatoriseinChinaandaroundtheworldThecentralestimatesforsealevelriseinTable10.7aresmallerthantheTARmodelmeans(Churchetal.,2001)by0.0
