3、heriskstocoastalstatesinclude:ConsequencesoftheRiseofSeaLevelsShorelineerosionanddegradation.Risingsealevelsallowwavestopenetratefurtherinland,evenduringcalmconditions,increasingthepotentialforerosion.ConsequencesoftheRiseofSeaLevelsAmplifiedstormsurges.Coastalstormsoftencaus
4、estormsurges,whichoccurwhenhighwindspushwaterinland.Withrisingseas,stormsurgesoccurontopofanelevatedwaterlevelandreachfartherinland,withpotentiallycatastrophicdamagetohomesandinfrastructure.ConsequencesoftheRiseofSeaLevelsPermanentinundation.Manylow-lyingcoastallandareasareex
5、pectedtobegraduallysubmergedbyrisingsealevels.Ariseoftwofeetabovetoday'ssealevelwouldputmorethan$1trillionofpropertyandstructuresintheU.S.atriskofinundation,withroughlyhalfofthatvalueconcentratedininFlorida.ConsequencesoftheRiseofSeaLevelsSaltwaterintrusion.Saltwatercanreachf
6、urtherintocoastalgroundwatersourcesassealevelrises,increasingthesalinityoffreshwaterusedfordrinkingandagriculture.MyestimatefortheseatoriseinChinaandaroundtheworldLengthrecordsformtheonlydirectevidenceofglacierchangethathaspotentialglobalcoveragebefore1950.Wecalculateagloball
7、yrepresentativesignalfrom349glacierlengthrecords.Bymeansofscaling,wededuceaglobalglaciervolumesignal,thatiscalibratedonthemass-balanceandgeodeticobservationsoftheperiod1950–2005.Wefindthattheglaciercontributiontosea-levelrisewas8.4 ± 2.1 cmfortheperiod1800–2005and9.1 ± 2.3 cm
