3、thofalternative/complementarymedicine,whichisusedbyasmanyasoneinthreeAmericans.Althoughmostofthosestillrefrainfrominformingtheirregularphysiciansaboutthatuse,thereisagrowingtendencyamongphysicianstoacknowledgeandevenembracecertainformsofalternative/comple
4、mentarymedicine.Changesintheuseoftheterms"alternative"and"complementary"suggesttheshapeofthisshift.Atfirst,itwascalledsimply"alternativemedicine,"reflectingadissatisfactionwithregularmedicineaswellasaculturalrebellionagainstthebiomedicalcommunity.Inmorere
5、centyears,severalstudiesindicatethattherehasbeenashiftfrom"alternative"therapiesto"complementary"therapies,adoptednotinoppositiontoregularmedicinebutinalliancewithit.Andincreasinglythosewhouseoneofthemanyformsofcomplementarymedicinearenottreatingaspecific
6、medicalproblem.Rather,theyarepracticingpreventioninwaystheyfindmorecongruentwiththeirphilosophicalvaluesorlifestyle.NowIthinkwemaybeseeinganotherrefinement,onethatistakingusfrom"complementary"to"safeandeffective."Forsomepeople,theappealofalternativemedici
7、neliesinitsalternativestance,andassomeofthesetherapiesenterthemainstream,someoftheseindividualsmayseekotheralternativepractices.ButmoreandmoreAmericansaredemandinggreatercertaintyfromalternativeorcomplementaryproductsasanincreasingnumberofpressreportsdocu
