2、icationsandtheiruse.Theyadvisephysiciansandotherhealthpractitionersontheselection,dosages,interactions,andsideeffectsofmedications.Pharmacistsalsomonitorthehealthandprogressofpatientsinresponsetodrugtherapytoensurethesafeandeffectiveuseofmedication.Pharmacistsmustunderstandtheuse,clinicaleffect
3、s,andcompositionofdrugs,includingtheirchemical,biological,andphysicalproperties.Mostpharmacistsworkinacommunitysetting,suchasaretaildrugstore,orinahealthcarefacility,suchasahospital,nursinghome,mentalhealthinstitution,orneighborhoodhealthclinic.Working ConditionsPharmacistsworkinclean,well-ligh
4、ted,andwell-ventilatedareas.Manypharmacistsspendmostoftheirworkdayontheirfeet.Whenworkingwithsterileordangerouspharmaceuticalproducts,pharmacistswearglovesandmasksandworkwithotherspecialprotectiveequipment.Manycommunityandhospitalpharmaciesareopenforextendedhoursoraroundtheclock,sopharmacistsma
5、yworknights,weekends,andholidays.Consultantpharmacistsmaytraveltonursinghomesorotherfacilitiestomonitorpatients'drugtherapy.About21percentofpharmacistsworkedparttimein2004.Mostfull-timesalariedpharmacistsworkedapproximately40hoursaweek.Some,includingmanyself-employedpharmacists,workedmorethan50
6、hoursaweek.Training, Other Qualifications, and AdvancementAlicensetopracticepharmacyisrequiredinallStates,theDistrictofColumbia,andallU.S.territories.Toobtainalicense,theprospectivepharmacistmustgraduatefromacollegeofpharmacythatisaccreditedbytheAccreditationCouncilforPharmacyEducation(ACPE)and
7、passanexamination.AllStatesrequiretheNorthAmericanPharmacistLicensureExam(NAPLEX),whichtestspharmacyskillsandknowledge,and43statesandtheDistrictofColumbiarequiretheMultistatePharmacyJurisprudenceExam(MPJE),whichtestspharmacylaw.Bo
