3、ormanConquestandMiddleEnglish(1100-1500)In1066,theNormansconqueredEngland.Frenchbecamethelanguageofthewealthyandpowerful,andEnglishwasspokenmostlybypoorerpeople.Inthelatefourteenthcentury,Englishbecamethefirstlanguageagain.Bythistime,manywordsusedinE
4、nglishcamefromFrenchorLatin,andalotoftheearlywordsnolongerexist.In1204AD,KingJohnlosttheprovinceofNormandytotheKingofFrance.ThisbeganaprocesswheretheNormannoblesofEnglandbecameincreasinglyestrangedfromtheirFrenchcousins.Englandbecamethechiefconcernof
5、thenobility,ratherthantheirestatesinFrance,andconsequentlythenobilityadoptedamodifiedEnglishastheirnativetongue.About150yearslater,theBlackDeath(1349-50)killedaboutonethirdoftheEnglishpopulation.Andasaresultofthisthelabouringandmerchantclassesgrewine
6、conomicandsocialimportance,andalongwiththemEnglishincreasedinimportancecomparedtoAnglo-Norman.ThismixtureofthetwolanguagescametobeknownasMiddleEnglish.ThemostfamousexampleofMiddleEnglishisChaucer'sCanterburyTales.UnlikeOldEnglish,MiddleEnglishcanbere
7、ad,bymodernEnglish-speakingpeople.TheMiddleEnglishperiodcametoaclosearound1500ADwiththeriseofModernEnglish.ModernEnglish(1500-today)ModernEnglishin1700asthesectorgenerallywasdividedintoearlymodernEnglishandlateModernEnglish.In1700Englishlanguagestand
8、ardizationandthestandardizationprocesshasbeencompleted,thefutureofEnglishpronunciationandgrammardon’ttakegreatchanges,onlyvocabularyisexpandedcontinuously.
