2、tivitywhichdonotseemcompatiblewithonanother:hewasasuccessfulbusinessman,whileatthesametmewritingpoetryofakindwhichwastomakehimaleaderamongcontemporarypoets.Secondly,hewasinhisearlycareerinfluencedbytheimagistmovement.Thirdly,hiswritingstyleinthefinalphaseunderwentasignificantchange.Hebecamediffus

3、eandreflective.ThestyleofhispoetryHewasaverysensualpoet,anddelightsindepictingtheworldasrevealedtothesenses,colors,soundsandexoticimagesallappealtohim.Hewasinfluencedbytheimagistmovementinhisearlycareer.Buthisstyleinthefinalphraseofhiscareerunderwentasignificantchange.Hebecameincreasinglymoremedi

4、tativeandevenobscureinstyleandmoredifficulttoread.Stevenheldthatapoetlivesintwoworlds:theworldofrealityandtheworldofimagination.Herepeatedlydealsinhispoetrywiththeroleofthepowerofimagination.Theexaltationoftheroleofimaginationandthatofartreachesthehighestpointinhim.Realityistheproductoftheimagina

5、tionasitshapestheworld.Becauseitisconstantlychangingasweattempttofindimaginativelysatisfyingwaystoperceivetheworld,realityisanactivity,notastaticobject.Weapproachrealitywithapiecemealunderstanding,puttingtogetherpartsoftheworldinanattempttomakeitseemcoherent.Tomakesenseoftheworldistoconstructawor
