4、theTangDynasty,itwaspromotedtoprefecturestatusandgivenitscurrentnameinAD675.ThenameWenzhouwasformedfromthenearbyWenqiaoMountains(温峤岭)andtheadditionofthe-zhou"prefecture"suffix.Throughoutitshistory,Wenzhou'straditionaleconomicrolehasbeenasaportgivingaccesstothemountainousin
5、teriorofsouthernZhejiangProvince.In1876Wenzhouwasopenedtotheforeignteatrade,butnoforeignsettlementwaseverestablishedthere.Between1937and1942,duringtheSecondSino-JapaneseWar,WenzhouachievedimportanceasoneofthefewportsstillunderChinesecontrol.Itdeclinedinthelateryearsofthewa
6、r,butbegantorecoveraftercoastaltradealongtheZhejiangcoastwasre-establishedin1955.languageWenzhounativesspeakWuChinese,whichisthespokenlanguageofthepeoplefromHangzhou,Suzhou,andShanghai.However,geographicisolationandtheimmigrationofSouthernMinChinesespeakersfromnearbyFujian
