6、nteraction;itiswhatwewouldcallthemacroscopiccrosssectionΣinthecaseofneutroninteraction.Thereareseveraldifferentprocessesofgammainteraction.Eachprocesscanbetreatedasoccurringindependentlyofeachother;forthisreasonµisthesumoftheindividualcontributions.The
7、secontributions,ofcourse,arenotequallyimportantatanygivenenergy.Eachprocesshasitsownenergyvariationaswellasdependenceontheatomicnumberoftheabsorber.Wewillfocusourdiscussionsonthethreemostimportantprocessesofgammainteraction,Comptonscattering,photoelect
8、riceffect,andpairproduction.Thesecanbeclassifiedbyobjectwithwhichthephotoninteractsandthetypeofprocess(absorptionorscattering).Asshowninthematrixbelow,photoelectricistheabsorptionofaphotonfollowedbytheejectionofanatomicelectron.Comptons
