2、nitscurrentnameinAD675.ThenameWenzhouwasformedfromthenearbyWenqiaoMountains(温峤岭)andtheadditionofthe-zhou"prefecture"suffix.Also,Wenzhou’spresentnamederivesfromitsmildclimate.Wenzhouhasahumidsubtropicalclimatewithshort,mild,drywintersandlong,hot,humidsummers.Summersaresimilartotheremainder
3、oftheprovince,butwinterismuchmilder,partlyduetothesoutherlylocationandpartlyduetotheshelteringeffectofthesurroundingmountains.Heavyrainfallsoccurinlatespringandearlysummerduetothemonsoon,whiletyphoonsarecommoninlatesummercausingconsiderabledamageanddestruction.SomeplacesinWenzhousuffersfr
4、omtyphoonsverymuch.Andeverysummer,peoplefromtheseplaceshavetobereadytoagainsttyphoons’attacks.Throughoutitshistory,Wenzhou'straditionaleconomicrolehasbeenasaportgivingaccesstothemountainousinteriorofsouthernZhejiangProvince.In1876Wenzhouwasopenedtotheforeignteatrade,butnoforeignsettlement
5、waseverestablishedthere.Between1937and1942,duringtheSecondSino-JapaneseWar,WenzhouachievedimportanceasoneofthefewportsstillunderChinesecontrol.Itdeclinedinthelateryearsofthewar,butbegantorecoveraftercoastaltradealongtheZhejiangcoastwasre-establishedin1955.WenzhounativesspeakWuChinese,whic
6、histhespokenlanguageofthepeoplefromHangzhou,Suzhou,andShanghai.However,geographicisolationandtheimmigrationofSouthernMinChinesespeakersfromnearbyFujianProvincehavecausedWenzhou'sspokenlanguagetoevolveintoadialectthatisamixtureofvariousdialects.Asaresult,peoplefromalloverChina,includingtho
