2、rned40.Upuntilthatmoment,Ihadbeenthatclassiccorporatewarrior--Iwaseatingtoomuch,Iwasdrinkingtoomuch,IwasworkingtoohardandIwasneglectingthefamily.AndIdecidedthatIwouldtryandturnmylifearound.Inparticular,IdecidedIwouldtrytoaddressthethornyissueofwork-lifebalance.SoIsteppedbackfromtheworkforce,andIspe

3、ntayearathomewithmywifeandfouryoungchildren.ButallIlearnedaboutwork-lifebalancefromthatyearwasthatIfounditquiteeasytobalanceworkandlifewhenIdidn'thaveanywork.(Laughter)Notaveryusefulskill,especiallywhenthemoneyrunsout.　　SoIwentbacktowork,andI'vespentthesesevenyearssincestrugglingwith,studyingandwri

4、tingaboutwork-lifebalance.AndIhavefourobservationsI'dliketosharewithyoutoday.Thefirstis:ifsociety'stomakeanyprogressonthisissue,weneedanhonestdebate.Butthetroubleissomanypeopletalksomuchrubbishaboutwork-lifebalance.Allthediscussionsaboutflexi-timeordress-downFridaysorpaternityleaveonlyservetomaskth

5、ecoreissue,whichisthatcertainjobandcareerchoicesarefundamentallyincompatiblewithbeingmeaningfullyengagedonaday-to-daybasiswithayoungfamily.Nowthefirststepinsolvinganyproblemisacknowledgingtherealityofthesituationyou'rein.Andtherealityofthesocietythatwe'reinistherearethousandsandthousandsofpeopleout

6、thereleadinglivesofquiet,screamingdesperation,wheretheyworklong,hardhoursatjobstheyhatetoenablethemtobuythingstheydon'tneedtoimpresspeopletheydon'tlike.(Laughter)(Applause)It'smycontentionthatgoingtoworkonFridayinjeansand[a]T-shirtisn'treallygettingtothenuboftheissue.　　(Laughter)Thesecondobservatio
