3、tions.Yetin1904,theyjoinedforcestobuildandsellmotorcars.And,justtwoyearslater,thepartnershiphadproducedtheRolls-RoyceSilverGhost:acaracclaimedasthe"bestintheworld". Inthelate1800's,HenryRoyceandCharlesRollsweregoingthroughexperienceswhichmadetheirmeetingandt
4、hecarstheyproducealmostinevitable.Royce,thesonofamiller,had,byanystandards,adifficultstartinlife.Hebeganworkat10,sellingnewspaper.ButhesoonfoundhisfirstrealjobworkingasanapprenticefortheGreatNorthernRailwayinPeterborough.Itwaswhilehewastherethathelearntmostof
5、thebasicsofengineering.Evenatthatage,Roycewasdeterminedtodowellbecausehesetaboutteachinghimselfforeignlanguages,algebraandthefundamentalsofelectricity.At19,hewenttoLiverpoolastechnicaladvisortotheLancashireMaximandWesternElectricCompany.Andthen,justthreeyears
6、later,heandapartnersetupbusinessinManchester,makingelectriclightfittingsandcranes.SuchwasRoyce'sdeterminationthatbytheturnofthecenturytheorderbookswerefullandthebusinesswasgoingfromstrengthtostrength. Allthis,ofcourse,wasquiteanachievementforsomeonewhohadsta
7、rtedalmostliterallywithnothing.Buttherealturningpointwasyettocome.Thishappenedin1903whenRoyceboughthimselfasecondhandFrenchcar.Thecarwasdifficulttostart;itoverheatedwithdepressingregularity;itvibrated;itwasunreliableandtheignitionsystemwashopelesslyinefficien
