2、abularyandtrainthemindofstudentsandgetthemeducatedmorally,intellectuallyandphysically.So,teachersplayingproperrolesintheclassroomisofvitalimportance.Therolesoftheteacherwilldependtoalargeextentonthefunctionheperformsindifferentactivities.Alotofeffortshavebeendevotedtoresearchesonteacher’srol
3、es.Forexample,fromRichards’s(1990)understanding,thefollowingareamongthekindsofrolesteachersmayseeforthemselvesintheclassroom:1)monitorofstudentlearning;2)motivator;3)organizerandcontrollerofpupilbehavior;4)providerofaccuratelanguagemodels;5)counselorandfriend;6)needsanalyst;7)materialsdevelo
4、per;8)evaluator.Basedonthefunctiontheteacherperformsindifferentactivities,Harmerdefinestheteacher’srolesascontroller,assessor,organizer,prompter,participantandresource-provider(Harmer,1983.201).Thelatterarethemostcommonrolesthatteachersplayinpresent-dayforeignlanguageteachingandaretheoneswet
5、alkinthispaper.2.DefinitionsofRoleandTeacher’sRoleTheword“role”derivesfromthedrama.In1934,G.H.Meaduseditfirstlytorefertoapartapersonplayintheperformanceofsociallife.Later,Ellis&McClintock(1990)definestheroleastheparticipantinanyactofcommunicationwhichinvolveshisparticularstatus,identityandbe
6、havior.Theyinvolvedifferentkindsofwork,levelsofresponsibility,kindsofrelationships,patternsofinteractionandcommunication,andpowerrelationships.Ineducation,accordingtoNunan(1993),therolereferstothesocialandinterpersonalresponsibilityassumedbyteachersandlearnersasclassparticipantsandtheparttea
7、chersandlearnersplayinfulfillinglearningtasks.Theroleofteacherisprimarilyanoccupationalrole,predeterminedbythenatureofschoolsandofteaching.Teachersinterprettheirrolesindifferentwaysdependingonthekindsofschoolsinwhichtheywork,theteachingmethodstheye
