3、ingtext-messagingintotreatmentregimes.Thestudy,fundedbyVodafone,theworld'slargestmobileoperator,waspublishedthisweek.Usingtextingtoboostefficiencyisnotrocketscience,butbigsavingscanbeachieved.SeveraltrialscarriedoutinEnglandhavefoundthattheuseoftext-messagingremindersreducesthenumberofmissedappoint
4、mentswithfamilydoctorsby26-39%,forexample,andthenumberofmissedhospitalappointmentsby33-50%.Ifsuchschemeswererolledoutnationally,thiswouldtranslateintoannualsavingsof£256m-364m.Textmessagesarealsobeingusedtoremindpatientsaboutbloodtests,clinics,scansanddentalappointments.SimilarschemesinAmerica,Norw
5、ayandSwedenhavehadequallysatisfyingresults—thoughtheuseoftext-messageremindersintheNetherlands,wherenon-attendanceratesarelow,at4%,hadnoeffectotherthantoannoypatients.Textmessagescanalsobeagoodwaytospreadpublic-healthinformation,particularlytogroupswhoarehardtoreachbyothermeans,suchasteenagers,orin
6、developingcountrieswhereothermeansofcommunicationareunavailable.TextmessageshavebeenusedinIndiatoinformpeopleabouttheWorldHealthOrganisation'sstrategytocontroltuberculosis,forexample,andinKenya,NigeriaandMalitoprovideinformationaboutHIVandmalaria.InIraq,textmessageswereusedtosupportacampaigntovacci
