2、tionArts&SciencesPennsylvaniaStateUniversityTheHongPsychologicalReactanceScale(HPRS;Hong&Felda,1996)wasdevelopedtomea-suretheindividualdifferenceinreactanceproneness,thatis,aperson’straitpropensitytoexpe-riencepsychologicalreactance.Weperformedconfirmatoryfactoranalysestotestthedimens

3、ionalityofthe11-itemversionoftheHPRS.Threemessageoutcomevariables(i.e.,per-ceivedthreattofreedom,attitude,andintention)servedasreferencevariablestotestthecon-structvalidityoftheHPRS.Datafrom3studies(Ns=188,200,and233)ofreactionstopersua-sivehealthmessagesconfirmedtheexistenceof4first-

4、orderfactorsbutalsoprovidedevidencethattheHPRScanbetreatedasunidimensionalatthesecondorder.Therelationshipsbetweenthesecond-orderfactorandthemessageoutcomevariablesprovidedevidenceofthevalidityofthescale.EverypersuasiveattempthasthepotentialtosucceedorfailScale(HPRS;Hong&Faedda,1996).

5、Second,wehopedto(seeFoxcraft,Lister-Sharp,&Lowe,1997;Wallack,1981;locatethescaleinanomologicalnetworkofsituationalvari-Wilde,1993).Indeed,someeffortsatpersuasiondoproduceablesforevaluatingitsvalidity.Withthesegoalsinmind,wethedesiredresult,butmanyothersyieldnodiscernableef-carriedoutt

6、hreeinvestigations,eachofwhichexaminedfect.Inotherinstances,persuasiveattemptscausechangesinreactanceinthecontextofpersuasivehealthappeals.Weattitudeorbehaviorthataredirectlyatoddswiththeper-consideredthisanespeciallyvaluablearenainwhichtoun-suader’sintention(seeGuttman,Kegler,&McLero

7、y,1996;derstandreactancegiventhefactthatindividualsmostatriskHornik,2002;Stewart&Martin,1994).Thetheoryofpsy-forvarioushealththreatsarealsotheindividualsmostlikelychologicalreactanceisoftencalledontoexplainsuchunan-toexperiencereactancewhenexposedtopersuasivemes-ticipatedfailures(Breh
